Paleo-earthquake evidence and earthquake recurrence for Düzce fault, Turkey

چکیده
Paleoseismological trenching was performed along the Düzce fault providing some preliminary insight about its seismogenic behavior. Dating based on radiocarbon analysis of peat samples collected from trenches and suggested seven earthquakes have occurred since 1740 BC. Integrating date constraints events exposed in suggests a periodical earthquake recurrence model. According to linear sequential event serial that has minimum misfit determined by considering probability curve limits sample dates, interval is between 384 460 years (or possibly AD 394 400). A also calculated for last (1999 earthquake) distributions dates same serial. This probability-distribution-based method, similarly, predicted 1999 1933 2005 (±36 years) with 68% probability. After this verification, using it estimated next occurring 2328 2392. calculation, 391 ± 34 967 historical likely ruptured fault. Assuming an average slip 350 cm (the earthquake), rate be 8.7 11.2 mm/a.

Earthquake recurrence-time variations with and without fault-zone interactions
The macroscopic behaviour of a fault zone can be described by a classic Coulomb friction law and static^kinetic rheology. The critical failure stress leading to the activation of a single shear zone segment then depends on the normal stress acting on the future fault plane. It is known that the seismic cycle on a main fault patch can be modulated by surrounding fault activations, leading to int...
متن کاملLong-range Earthquake Fault Models
U the physics of complex phenomena such as earthquakes is a formidable challenge. Because we are constrained by our inability to do experiments on earthquake faults, we turn to computers as our earthquake laboratories. Computer simulations of earthquakes help us to test theoretical models and allow us to generate catalogs of synthetic earthquake events. In this column, we discuss several models...
متن کاملScaling of earthquake fault parameters
The long-standing conflict between the predictions of elastic dislocation models and the observation that average coseismic slip increases with rupture length is resolved with application of a simple displacement-depth function and assumption that the base of the seismogenic zone does not result from the onset of viscous relaxation, but rather a transition to stable sliding in a medium that rem...
متن کاملSeismic Fault Rheology and Earthquake Dynamics
As preparation for this Dahlem Workshop on The Dynamics of Fault Zones, specifically on the subtopic “Rheology of Fault Rocks and Their Surroundings,” we addressed critical research issues for understanding the seismic response of fault zones in terms of the constitutive response of fault materials. This requires new concepts and a host of new observations and experiments to document material r...
متن کاملA Physically Based Earthquake Recurrence Model for Estimation of Long-Term Earthquake Probabilities
A physically-motivated model for earthquake recurrence based on the Brownian relaxation oscillator is introduced. The renewal process defining this point process model can be described by the steady rise of a state variable from the ground state to failure threshold as modulated by Brownian motion. Failure times in this model follow the Brownian passage time (BPT) distribution, which is specifi...
